Vol. 17 No. 16 April 22, 2001
Galatians 3:26, "For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus." This verse tells how, through what means or by what action the saved are children of God by faith. The next verse says: "FOR as many of you as have been BAPTIZED INTO Christ have PUT ON CHRIST."
Faith is an essential part of salvation in that there is no salvation without it. However, faith alone, does not bring salvation. Faith is nothing in and of itself. "Faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone...faith without works is dead...by works a man is justified, and not by faith only...faith without works is dead" (James 2:17,20,24,26).
By faith, one is baptized INTO Christ in order to have his sins washed away (Acts 22:16; Rom. 6:3-6). This is the process of being "born again" (John 3:3-5) wherein one is raised up from baptism to walk a new life, being THEN made free from sin (Rom. 6:4,18). Without faith, baptism is in vain.
All actions approved of God are done according to God's authority; and, therefore, are done BY FAITH. That is, without faith, whatever we do does not meet with God's approval. We, by faith, REPENT of our sins (Acts 2:38). By faith, we CONFESS Jesus as the Christ (Rom. 10:10). By faith, we are BAPTIZED FOR the forgiveness of our sins (Acts 2:38; 22:16). By faith, we're FAITHFUL that we might stand approved in his sight (Rev. 2:10). ALL that we do, we do BY FAITH! Therefore, we are "children of God by faith, FOR as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ."
Salvation is BY FAITH but only WHEN faith moves one to do what God said do to be saved! Abraham was justified by "faith" (Rom. 4:1-9) and "works" (James 2:21-23). "Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness."
Salvation does not come at the point of faith, but WHEN faith acts or works to do what God has commanded.
